GMP Calibration Requirements for Food and Pharmaceutical Factories in Thailand
Why Food and Pharma Calibration Is Held to a Higher Standard
Thailand is a major global exporter of food products and pharmaceuticals. Exporting factories must comply with GMP standards from importing countries — EU, US FDA, FSSC 22000, BRC, Codex Alimentarius, and Thai FDA — all of which mandate calibrated instruments with documented traceability chains. Non-compliance risks shipment detention, rejection, or loss of export licenses.
GMP Standards and Their Calibration Requirements
FSSC 22000 / ISO 22000
Instruments used to monitor Critical Control Points (CCPs) and Critical Limits must be calibrated and traceable. CCP monitoring equipment calibration is the highest priority activity under the standard.
BRC Global Standard for Food Safety
All monitoring equipment must have calibration records traceable to national or international standards. BRC auditors request equipment lists and calibration certificates directly during site audits.
EU GMP (for pharmaceutical exporters)
Annex 11 and Chapter 3 impose strict requirements for instrument validation and calibration, including IQ/OQ/PQ (Installation/Operational/Performance Qualification) qualification processes.
Key Instruments for Food and Pharma Calibration
Temperature Instruments (Highest Priority)
- Food thermometers — verify kill-step temperatures (HACCP CCP)
- Pasteurizer/sterilizer thermocouples — verify sterilization processes
- Cold room data loggers — Cold Chain monitoring (2–8°C for pharma, ≤ −18°C for frozen food)
Weighing Instruments
- Ingredient scales — CCP for formula-controlled products
- Checkweighers — prevent legally prohibited underfill
- Dispensing balances (pharma) — require high-precision calibration
pH and Chemical Analysis Instruments
- pH Meters — critical HACCP parameter (low pH inhibits pathogen growth)
- Refractometers — Brix control for juices, syrups, beverages
- Micropipettes — accurate dosing in QC labs
