Thailand's Automotive Industry and Its Strict Calibration Requirements
Thailand is ASEAN's largest automotive hub. Parts factories in Rayong, Ayutthaya, Samut Prakan, and Chonburi must hold IATF 16949 certification, which carries far stricter calibration and Measurement System Analysis (MSA) requirements than standard ISO 9001.
What IATF 16949 Requires for Calibration
Clause 7.1.5.1 — Monitoring and Measurement Resources
Records must be maintained for every measuring instrument used in product inspection, including:
- Equipment type and ID number
- Current calibration status
- Next calibration due date
- Evidence that the instrument is traceable to international or national standards
Clause 7.1.5.1.1 — Calibration/Verification Records
Calibration records must contain:
- The measurement standard revision used
- Before and after adjustment results
- Measurement uncertainty values
- Calibrating lab information (including ISO 17025 or NIST traceability)
Clause 7.1.5.2 — Measurement System Analysis (MSA)
This is what sets IATF 16949 apart from ISO 9001. Factories must conduct MSA for every measurement system used in product inspection:
- Gauge R&R (Repeatability & Reproducibility) — quantifies how much variation comes from the gauge versus the operator
- Bias Study — checks how far the average measurement deviates from the true value
- Linearity Study — verifies bias is consistent across the measurement range
- Stability Study — confirms the measurement system is consistent over time
General acceptance criteria: %R&R < 10% acceptable; 10–30% conditional; > 30% requires improvement.
